WEST WITTERING

A very popular south coast location, West Wittering can be sailed in most wind directions. The sandy beach on this 40 acre site is SW facing and depending on the state of the tide, offers anything from wave sailing on the sand bar at high tide to flat water blasting on the speed strip at low tide. Inexperienced windsurfers may find the groynes on the beach a bit difficult to launch through at high tide though there is very little in the way of shore dump. The local club West Wittering WS Club (Tel: 01243 513077) has changing rooms, showers, clubroom and a rescue boat that is manned full time during the summer. The beach is zoned during summer for swimmers and you must launch and land in the designated area. From May to mid September windsurfing is restricted to club members and their guests but is open to all the rest of the year. 2XS (Tel: 01243 512522) is the local shop although based online, tuition, hire and demo kit can be found down at the beach. There is a computerised weather line giving tide times, wind speed and direction on 0891 518628.
