Gran Canaria and Tenerife are no doubt two of the most consistent locations on the planet for wind and waves during the European summer. However, even the windswept Canary Islands have their off-season, which is why Dany Bruch and World Champions Iballa Moreno and Philip Koester took to the air like demented migratory Canaries and landed on my doorstep in Western Oz, hungry to satisfy their addictions.

TRUE TALENT
The unique quality about a truly natural wave sailor is when you take them away from the familiarity of their home break, and force them to adapt their style in a totally new arena. The first instance I witnessed of this was with Philip Koester, at a little-sailed spot away from the crowds around the Margaret River region that works on smaller swells. The tricky thing about this break is that it’s a reforming, rebounding and difficult little wave to read and to be able to sail it well definitely isn’t easy. The challenge was on!
