Moving on from our previous run of wave and freestyle-wave tests, we turn our attention to some much faster kit. This time we checked-out some speed/slalom boards and put six of the finest approximately 110 litre/69 cm wide boards under the microscope.

Slalom and speed sailing is becoming ever more popular with growing slalom fleet sizes at both international and national levels, which is creating demand right down to the grassroots.

All of the boards on test are between 68 and 70cm wide. Construction wise they are all the top-level models available, which means they are extremely lightweight but also more on the pricey side. However, in some cases, slightly more durable and affordable options are available.

PRODUCTION POWER
There’s also the growing popularity for strapping a portable GPS to your arm and competing with people anywhere in the world or just trying to beat your own PB. While we tested this gear the 50-knot barrier was repeatedly smashed, using a lot of production equipment, which just proves how much better the wide range of products on the market are getting season-on-season.

SUIT YOU SIR?
Who are these boards designed for? Well, bar one (Tabou Speedster) all the boards in this test are top level race boards designed for the elite to race head-to-head in international events such as the production board only PWA Slalom 63 format. That’s right, you get to sail the same boards as the current podium toppers straight off-the-shelf of your local dealer. Sound a bit daunting still? Don’t be put off because modern slalom boards are not the super technical beast that they used to be and are generally a lot easier for everybody to sail and enjoy some high performance on. In fact, unless you’re totally into carving turns, then these are in reach of any riders capable of planing in the straps who simply want to go as fast as possible – but bear in mind they’re expensive bits of kit to dent-up if you’re still learning the basics and prone to the odd catapult.

TRENDS
Although many brands offer a ‘de-tuned’ and more comfortable ‘easier-to-control versions based on their top-end racing boards, nearly all of this selection had extra attention to detail regarding comfort and stance. Of course this could be because they are intended to sell as-raced on the PWA to ‘mere mortal’ customers, but also it’s worth bearing in mind the pro tour and many national tours offer extended reaches and long distance races in their mix of courses, so a little more luxury in the pad and strap and stance department becomes an advantage. Also, due to the range of possible racing conditions and that, bar the start, the only real windows to make large gains when racing are around the gybe marks, the brands tend to have a good balance between top speed and manoeuvrability in mind – once again, all good news for the consumer.

TEST GROUND
A year on from the ‘Arab Spring’ and life is still as safe and settled as ever in all the windsurfing meccas of Egypt. It’s a shame to hear that visitor levels are down due to politics but the wind still blows and the water‘s wide open and waiting so we can only say ‘get down there!’ Once again we headed out to the warm waters of the Gulf of Aqaba’s Dahab and were hosted by the impressive Harry Nass centre 2. Unless you’re only into full-on waves, this is a windsurfer’s paradise and the ultimate place to pitch these types of boards head-to-head against each other. Despite a run of untypically light wind days we scored a good range of conditions on our 2-week trip, with winds ranging from fifteen up to around thirty knots plus a good variety of water states, from smooth-and- flat to large chop and rolling swell outside – ideal for testing them to the full. We also had a good range of different sails available to use and take full advantage of the conditions. The 7.0 multi cam race sails (also tested and reported in this issue) being the most-used in the conditions we had, plus some larger, cammed 8m sails as well for lighter days. The sailing in Dahab is amazing and although this wasn’t the windiest trip we’ve had there, we had a great time racing all over the bay, as well as screaming up and down the speed strip – just not quite up to 50 knots though!

METHOD
After a mammoth unpacking session and before we strap them up, we always pore over each board and note the main features and settings, quality of construction , straps and pads and assess all the key variants (mast track distance from tail, stance etc.) and look for any major discrepancies to quoted facts and figures (bar volume). At this point we weigh boards ‘dressed’ with their sailing weights including straps and fins (where appropriate) included. In future we plan to quote both naked and dressed weights due to some heated debate on the issue! Once on the water we try them in every type of water we can, at each end of their quoted spectrum of use using all the sail size ranges also on test to broaden the wind range we can sail in. We’re sure to swap fins and rigs and riders continuously and make daily notes on each board’s behaviour, with sailors of all weights contributing their reactions.

GPS
This time we also began to experiment with a couple of Navi units supplied by GPS-speedsurfing.co.uk and hope to be able to integrate that kind of data more in the future. Without more units we found it difficult to keep track of all the rider/sail/board combos when comparing the side-by-side tracks at the end of a day on the water. We’ll keep investigating this side to see how we can better collect and use this information in later tests.

TESTERS
This time we had two lightweights, (myself and Fraser Green) and two both taller and heavier riders (Toby Gibson and Brian McDowell) to hand.

RESULTS
You’d think in a slalom/speed board test it would be easy to say which board is the fastest, a clear winner? But the results are not all about speed, with comfort, sailing position, turning ability and acceleration being some of the main considerations. A lot depends on the type of water you’ll mostly sail in, your height, perhaps harness type and stance, ability and, of course, the types of rigs you have or intend to pair them with. (Would you pick a high-and-forward-pulling upright position, deep downwind speed run stanced powerhouse rig for a turny board? Or an easy-handling and fun-to-gybe sail on an all-out straight-line speed hull?) After hours of in-depth assessment we’ve laid out the key characteristics of each board for you to choose based on your personal preferences and likely matching quivers. THE LOW DOWN

For 2013 JP introduce their 9th generation slalom board line, consisting of six boards and, depending on your weight and style, you have two boards to choose from for every wind state – wider and more powerful or narrower and more controlled. Tested here is the 68, which is the wider board for medium winds. The new boards have been tuned-up since 2012, now featuring flatter decks with refined outline curves and hull shape that’s thinner up front and thicker further aft.

PERFORMANCE

The JP is solid underfoot, packing plenty of volume throughout its length. It powers-up early and accelerates quickly onto the plane. From the straps the ride is comfortable with the domed rail race deck lifting you into an aggressive position to control and drive hard through both legs in all water states. A true slalom shape, it’s very fast in a straight line with a high-performance top gear that’s very easy to access and maximise – widening its appeal to a wide range of rider abilities. Round the corners it cuts a smooth arc and holds its speed for lightning exits.

THE VERDICT

The JP is a versatile racer that’s not particularly technical to ride but rewards every effort of input with blistering performance. On the straights it has a powerful, flat-trimmed and locked-in ride, while round the corners it has an adaptable style and holds speed extremely well. It would suit any bodyweight and level of rider – from expert to rookie – and handle a wide range of conditions well. A slalom board that anyone’s capable of sailing fast.

THE LOW DOWN

The Mistral Slalom is a classic race board, available in three sizes. The range is designed by renowned speedsailor and shaper Chris Lockwood and tested by racing and 50-knot club legend Anders Bringdal with a view to suiting a range of conditions and performing on any type of slalom course.

PERFORMANCE

Instantly comfortable with the comfortable pads and DaKine straps giving a secure stance, the Mistral Slalom is no slouch to get up-and-planing, although the lighter riders found it required a little more effort to really fly from standing. In the straps there’s positive drive and the 112 powers-off the fin and rides low, with a locked-down stance that at first felt frightening in chop – especially on deeper downwind runs - but actually handles rougher water admirably. There’s no lack of speed and it ably copes with a wide range of conditions at full pelt, the nose soaking up rough water easily and the extra length effortlessly dealing with bigger swell – especially heading upwind. The boxy rails are perfect for driving hard through even the most challenging of situations and give the board the feel of being able to hold larger sails than quoted. Around the corners it holds plenty of speed, but definitely favours a wider arc for the fastest gybe exits and also being in the control of more experienced riders.

THE VERDICT

The Mistral is a classic slalom racer in modern construction form. It goes extremely fast in a straight line and cuts a fast turn around the mark. The shape works well in a wide range of conditions, particularly in gnarlier settings. Best suited to the more experienced and maybe heavier rider who wants a dependable shape to race around the slalom course or for blistering GPS speed sailing runs.

THE LOW DOWN

The X-Fire is RRD’s top-end slalom board line, with the V4 tested here as-ridden to victory by 2012 World Champion Antoine Albeau. For 2013 the range has been tuned-up further featuring a new ‘Toro Tail’ to reduce wetted surface area using modified cut-outs and improved rail profiles. As we publish there’s a new V5 now available.

PERFORMANCE

The width and volume make for a very stable feeling platform that predictably accelerates well onto the plane and has you swiftly in the straps. There’s a nice low-in-the-water feeling from the thin, trademark RRD rails, which never stuck to chop and encouraged an aggressive, upright stance. Standing tall over the cut-out tail you’re set to go as fast as you dare, and then some probably. Quite frankly, this board is terrifyingly fast, especially off wind. At the corners it has a nervy, highly versatile gybing style that gives heaps of feedback through every inch of the turn and scope to modify almost any arc – it’s easy to feel the potential of its mark-rounding prowess as already proven on the racecourse.

THE VERDICT

High speed and hi-tech, this board is seriously fast in a straight line, with a limitless top end that we didn’t even get close to reaching! Around the corners it’s also quick, but does require commitment. In the right hands it will be devastating in the racing environment but is not a hull for the feint-hearted or ill-experienced. Highly recommended for the skilled racer or high-speed thrill seeker, plus there’s also a new V5 model just out now!

THE LOW DOWN

The iSonic is Starboard’s PWA Production slalom racing line. For 2013 the range is split into three size categories (S, M &L) and the 107 fits bang in the medium grouping. This season the biggest tweaks to the 107 have involved tuned rail profiles (slightly thicker), new side and tail cut-outs and a superior full carbon bottom and deck layup.

PERFORMANCE

As the volume is mainly focused aft – leaving very little float forward – the iSonic isn’t the most stable off-the-plane. Thankfully this isn’t much of a problem due to the stunning acceleration that rapidly whips you through the gears. The ride from the straps is superb, with the raised stance area putting you in a powerful-yet-comfortable riding position that delivers a fully engaged and connected-to-the board sensation. The iSonic is extremely fast in a straight line. Lifting up and then riding very flat, it deals with chop extremely well – despite having such a short nose. Come gybe time there’s no loss of speed and, once you’ve set your arc, you’ll carve easily through almost any curve and power through the exit with maximum speed.

THE VERDICT

The iSonic is a seriously fast board but it’s the immediate acceleration and ability to swiftly pull away from other boards that sets it apart. Yes, it’s a technical bit of racing kit and, in the hands of an expert there’s no doubt it will win races, yet at the same time this 107 is comfortable to ride and has an accessible level of performance that less experienced riders can easily enjoy.

The Falcon is Fanatic’s PWA Production slalom racing board line with a CAD design shaped to deliver elite-level performance to pro racers and recreational sailors alike. For 2013 the range has evolved, with a new bottom shape, adjusted ‘volume flow’ (front thinned-out and tail straighter), increased deck recess and refined compact outline for improved control and comfort, especially over longer reaches and legs.

PERFORMANCE

Noticeably fast to accelerate, the Falcon required very little effort from the rider to get up-to-speed. From the straps it’s very comfortable underfoot with a riding position that just invites and encourages you to push it, offering perfect control at the top-end. The hull shape absorbs chop with ease and enables you to simply focus on going as fast as you dare push the limits. This board delivers a refined high-speed performance that’s easily accessible and undemanding on technical skill. Round the corners it’s a very versatile and easy-handling shape – with almost freeride-style carving manoeuvrability and body-positioning options – and holds speed well throughout turns, accelerating rapidly from each exit.

VERDICT

Fast, fun, easy and extremely comfortable, the Falcon delivers to all abilities of rider and is a forgiving race board that anyone can jump on and instantly enjoy blisteringly high levels of performance. In rough and challenging conditions there really isn’t much that can match the Fanatic for control, comfort and performance in a straight line or around the bends. The perfect choice for either rookie racers, or experienced sailors, looking for extra control on the race course.

THE LOW DOWN

The Speedster is an all-new board line in the Tabou range, replacing the Manta FR from last year. Labelling it as a ‘World Cup Freeride’ board, Tabou aim to share many of the performance features from their Manta PWA slalom race boards in an easier to control and less harsh-on-the-legs package.

PERFORMANCE

The most instantly noticeable characteristic when jumping onto the Speedster is the nice stable feel and comfy ride from the raised deckpads positioned over a domed rail and flat-decked stance area. The sailing position is elevated and perfect for channelling power into the board. The double-concave hull lifts swiftly onto the plane and accelerates well while skipping over chop without any worries at all. It’s certainly no slouch and in a straight line would give most full on slalom boards a good run for their money. But it’s when it comes to cornering that the Speedster really excels. A superb carver, once the rail is set, it simply grips and powers around at full tilt onto the opposite tack. With such a freeride feel it’s a super-versatile gybing machine capable of being thrown around all kinds of turns.

THE VERDICT

The Tabou speedster is a very capable freerace board that delivers awesome all-round performance, with a top-end that can mix it up with a hard-core dedicated slalom racing boards, yet still remains a lot of fun to sail. Able to deliver performance to any level of sailor the Speedster is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a fast and comfortable blasting or racing hull.
