PEUGEOT 308 SW 1.6 HDI 120 BHP GT LINE REVIEW

“A sporty estate with a boot big enough for all your gear, great handling and fine French design”

In an ideal world we all wake up on the beach, go windsurfing, eat, sleep and repeat. In the real world we still have to find a way to the sea and shore and the popular choice still lies with car over camel. Cars for windsurfing start and end with the load space and one of the leading estates in class is the Peugeot 308 SW. We recently had the chance to review one in GT guise and were left more than impressed. Let’s start with that boot, it extends to an impressive 1775 litres with the rear seats folded flat and loaded to the roof.

Peugeot make good use of their “Magic Flat” Rear Seats to offer a 2/3 1/3 split fold functionality. When lowered the rear seats lie flat to optimise loading and lowering the seats is a simple pull of the handles located in the boot area, a particularly useful feature when loading items in tighter spaces as there is no need to open the rear doors to lower the seats. The retractable boot cover can be pulled across to conceal items in the boot, retracted to allow for greater access, or removed all together for maximum load space with the seats folded. Folding down the back seats really is quick and painless with a design that leaves a flush surface; there’s even a well thought out storage area under the carpet at the rear to store the retractable parcel shelf when not in use.

The design of Peugeot 308 SW incorporates one of the lowest boot sills in the class with an unladen height of just 61cm and for additional security on the move, boot rails, complete with adjustable tethering hooks can be used to lash down your kit. The space is enough to throw in a board and a few sails and the conversion to beach wagon an easy transition.

This is just one of the faces of the 308 SW though and its ability to fulfil many roles makes it a versatile vehicle. The sporting looks give a hint to its pedigree but on the highway the attraction grows. Quick but on the right side of legal, handling is precise but still fun enough to make driving a pleasure not a chore. Cabin noise is minimal and a great stereo completes the relaxation package. Dotted round the cockpit is plenty of handy storage but one of the most pleasing attributes lies under the bonnet. The 120 bhp engine comes in a surprisingly economical package and for committed windsurfing van drivers, the marked improvement in economy makes this car a very attractive financial saving at the pump. Some pimp alloys, mean lines and French flair round off a car that balances cachet and practicality. If you need your ride to look good, work at the beach, office and school runs, the 308 SW is an option that gets our tick.
