NORTH RAM 7.0M 2013 TEST REVIEW

The low-down
The Ram F13 is North’s ‘easier to manage’ alternative based on their World Cup Warp slalom sails, with one less cam (3) and a narrower luff sleeve.  For 2013 the RAM has a new head outline and a less pronounced cutaway clew with improved acceleration and wind range in mind. It’s worth noting that the RAM comes with a standard 2-yr warranty upgradeable to 3 if you register the product online.

At-a-glance

Seven battens, with three micro leech battens

Three easy rotating ‘Hyper Cams’

X-ply reinforced foot

High-aspect outline

Small clew cut out

Twin clew cringles

Fairly flat foil

Quality attention to detail

Quality padded tack fairing

Rigging
With the friendly narrow sleeve and just 3 battens the RAM is unsurprisingly hassle free and easy sail to rig and tune, setting on a 460 Platinum 100% carbon mast. Using all of the usual North features such as ‘twin trim clew’ and Visual Trim System (VTS) it’s simple to get the sail tuned just right. For best performance we found it best to set the downhaul to maximum and then use with minimal outhaul – overall it has a very loose leech and fairly flat foil profile.

Performance
Feeling light and well balanced, with an equal pull on both hands and a forward drive, the RAM boasts an impressive wind range with excellent low down grunt and perfect control at the top-end. Come gybe time it feels fantastic, with light and easy handling allowing full power into high-speed gybes in all conditions. The cam rotation was super smooth and controlled.

The Verdict
The New Ram F13 is a great all-round slalom sail that combines race winning high performance with fun and easy handling. The bottom end performance is markedly improved from the 2012 model. All-in-all an attractive option for a wide range of riders looking to go fast with the minimum of hassle.
