Somehow I managed to hook up with Timo Mullen in Poole by 10am after borrowing a phone off a stranger on the boat and by the time we were on the road, our ETA was already 2pm – not accounting for any hold ups. As we passed by the Newquay turn-off Timo picked up a message on Twitter that Big wave surfers Tom Butler and Ben Skinner were about to tow surf the Cribbar. Immediately we looked at each other as if to say lets go for it, but since we were already late, we felt that we could lose another hour if this was a wild goose chase so continued on our way. A quick call to Blacky put our minds straight that we had made the right call “Are you two on drugs? The Cribbar will be death you Muppets, any mistake and you are on those rocks and there is no place to run!” Little did we know Steve Thorp was probably just about to drop into his first bomb right as we passed. We were in the right place at the right time and didn’t even know it. In hindsight that was a pretty gut-wrenching thought.
