SUNSET JUMPING AT CORONATION
Coronation is probably the most well-known beach in W.A. for windsurfing. Located 30 km. north of Geraldton (400 km. north of Perth), makes it a place where even people who live in Perth go for the weekend. The reason ‘Corros’ is so popular is that every level of windsurfer can have fun here thanks to the flat water in the front and waves out the back, which make it a perfect playground for everyone. For me personally this is the place where I’ve spent the most time during all of my trips to Oz. The wind is the strongest and most consistent here and for me it’s an amazing location to train as I can work on both jumps and the flat-water stuff all in one place. Yet the thing I love the most is, that after a few good freestyle sessions, I can go and grab my wave gear at the end of the day and just enjoy the surf out the back while the sun’s going down. Late in the day, the wind swings a bit more sideshore, making the wave riding even better and, if you’re lucky, the wind stays strong enough to go for some jumps into the sunset! There’s only one thing that does always make it a bit more interesting – and that’s the fact that, with the sun in your eyes, it’s sometimes really hard to see if someone’s behind the wave or not. But, somehow, nobody really crashes into each other –  although it gets pretty close sometimes! I, for example, landed my biggest back loop just two metres upwind of a friend of mine who was waterstarting behind the wave I took off from. Luckily for me and him, he was fast enough on his board to get out of the way, because I probably would’ve landed exactly on him, so if you ever make it to Coronation and sail at sunset, make sure you can waterstart fast enough and look up when you’re behind a big wave ‘cos otherwise you might be in for a painful surprise!!
