DIETER VAN DER EYKEN – WESTERN AUSTRALIA

THE PART OF GERALDTON I NEVER NOTICED
Australia is a place where you go and you think you’ve seen it all in a certain town but can still be surprised by places you drove by so many times without actually noticing them. I probably drove up and down to Geraldton from Perth six or seven times while missing out on one of the most beautiful vistas Geraldton has to offer. Just south of the town, big sand dunes give you an amazing view of the town, or in our case, an amazing background for pictures. After waiting the whole day in the town centre for the wind to pick up, my girlfriend and I decided to take a look at the sand dunes, not for sailing, but just to check it out and take some lifestyle pictures. As we arrived the wind picked up like it’d been waiting for us. Instead of just going for a walk over the dunes, I pulled my gear straight out of the van and rigged up as fast as possible. I wasn’t sure the wind was going to last for very long so I had to rig quickly. With the scenery being so different to Coronation I felt more like I was sailing in Brazil than in Australia. Not knowing where the pieces of reef where or if it was all a sandy bay or not, I wasn’t too comfortable. In the end I didn’t see or hit reef and I was able to land some good moves in this beautiful landscape that I’d driven past so many times. It makes going to explore new places all so more rewarding and shows how diverse this country even without driving massive distances. Even just to watch the sunset here on the dunes is definitely worth the stop on your way up to Coronation!
