DIETER VAN DER EYKEN – WESTERN AUSTRALIA

THE LUCKY DAY IN LUCKY BAY!
At the end of our 10-week trip the wind was finally good in Esperance (in the far south of W.A.). After waiting and checking the forecast for over two months it was finally working! Esperance is by far the most beautiful place to sail or surf in W.A.. The water is a bit colder than in the north but the colours are crystal blue with big white sandy beaches and almost always a surfable wave in an amazing landscape making it a must-see in Australia! After being more than excited to finally make it up there, our first few days involved down-the-line sailing at 9-mile beach – a pure aerial paradise! After three days of wavesailing the wind turned ENE (you normally want ESE here) and the swell began to drop. After a little surf session in the morning, the plan was to drive back to Perth to try and sell the van. But, still seeing some whitecaps far out and not wanting to leave such a beautiful place, we decide to head to the National park (12-dollar entry fee per car) to check it out for our last expedition in W.A. before driving back to the City the next day.
