DIETER VAN DER EYKEN – WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Not expecting to windsurf anymore, we straight went to Lucky Bay, one of the only places in W.A. that you can see kangaroos on the beach checking out the surf action. To my big surprise and joy the ENE wind blew perfectly through here at around 19 knots making it probably the best decision of the trip to stay just that extra day longer. The bay was huge, the watercolour was a clearer blue than any other place I’ve been in my life (it even beats Bonaire by far!) and there was nobody out there sailing at all! The first thing I noticed on launching was that the sand was actually a mixture of white sand and a lot of salt, making it almost as hard as concrete. On the water it was perfect 5.2 weather to freestyle at the most beautiful spot I’ve sailed at in my whole life. After an hour and a half the wind turned further to the NE and became really gusty and impossible to sail, prematurely ending the session a bit earlier than hoped. The windshift made me realise how lucky were were to score Lucky Bay during the quite unusual ENE wind direction.

After packing up the van to drive back to Perth (850 km.) a kangaroo showed up for us to take a picture together to remember this day forever. These are the special moments that make me love windsurfing so much for taking me to places I would never normally go to.

Traveling to W.A. is always a great adventure and it’s a place that I will return to many more times to find again new spots that I still haven’t seen yet as well as reacquaint myself with the older, familiar ones. The coastline is endless and the lifestyle is perfect, laidback and relaxed. W.A. is a trip that every windsurfer should make at least once in his or her life by just following the wind and enjoying life! I can’t wait till I make my next Ozzy trip!
