“For me Australia is the perfect place to live and windsurf! WA boasts amazing conditions with many many spots that quite often are nearly deserted. The people are open minded and friendly but also Australia is safe and very stable. It’s the total freedom combined with the perfect setup, organisation and simple way of life that make it very special to me.
The fact that the Lancelin event is a race for everybody and you can bring all your friends along makes it a real challenge for everyone. Either you are fighting for the top ranking or you just want to beat your best mate or even just to be able to finish the race and be part of the vibe. It’s just a bit over a 30 minute run for the best sailors but a true adventure for every participant.
The clue for setting up is already there in the name, “Downwind”! This means well powered (so you can sail deep reaches), you need lots of downhaul (so the sail can twist) and a good working outhaul kit (so you can deepen your sail for more power but also flatten it when the wind suddenly picks up). The outhaul kit is really a key factor. The “Long” nature of the race means you need to be comfortable. The sail size you will be able to handle with a good outhaul kit and adjustable harness lines but the board needs to be easy also. It is better not to be too big and mostly I choose one size smaller fin than normal. “Racing” equals go big! Sure you can go too big but most amateur racers are not able to finish because they chose too small sails.
