AWT PUNTA SAN CARLOS
Story Alex McKirgan // PHOTOS Kevin Pritchard & Frank McKirgan
West Wittering (U.K.) local Alex McKirgan, 15, pestered his generous father into letting him rub shoulders with legends and enter the 2013 American Windsurfing Tour (AWT) event at Mexico’s Punta San Carlos, Baja.
The AWT has a star-studded pro line-up, but, as Alex tells us, the atmosphere’s welcoming and competition is open to all levels …
Ever since I started windsurfing as a 5-year-old on one of the 2XS Rippers courses at West Wittering, I’ve watched videos and looked at pictures in the magazines of down-the-line waveriding. The idea of being able to ride clean waves in cross-off conditions has always sounded like my idea of heaven. The ideal place and opportunity to give it a try sounded like the AWT event at Punta San Carlos in Baja. People like Simon Bassett and Dave White had raved about the place, so I persuaded my Dad to give it a try.
