‘’For me to be in Mozambique and to spend 2 to 3 hours a day on Facebook is quite sad’’, I said. ‘’Why?’’, asks Jules, ‘’I need to know what’s going on in the world and I need to keep my profile updated, my fans love it and my sponsors pay me for this.’’ ‘’But do you realize that we already spend at list a third of our life sleeping? What’s surrounding you here in Mozambique is unique, real and it’s great as it is different from your home. Your Facebook is virtual and the same everywhere you go. Do it at home when it is raining outside but not here under the blue sky in front of wonderful white sand beaches and point breaks!’’, I argued back.
‘’Cool down Gilles, Jules is free to do what he wants’’ says Thomas laughing. ‘’You sound a bit old school. Even though I pretty much agree with you… but today is like that, people need their Facebook and Instagram. It is like an addiction.’’ ‘’An addiction?’’, cries Jules. ‘’You guys are crazy, it’s just the trend and I follow it that’s it.’’ ‘’Speaking of addiction, let’s go check behind that point I have the feeling that there is a side-offshore hidden wave breaking. The search, that is my addiction and it is a good one’’, I replied. ‘’You guys can go; I don’t feel like walking on a Cobra or a bloody spider. I’d rather wait for you in the car checking my Facebook’’, said a joking Jules. ‘’Let’s go the 2 of us then’’, said Thomas, keen to diffuse any tension.
There was no wave behind that point, but the track was a must see. While walking on those rocks, shaped by the waves overhanging the turquoise sea, we could witness at least a dozen whales jumping with their calves only half a kilometre offshore and schools of dolphins surfing some close out sections of a virgin beach-break. Apart from a fisherman carrying a handmade spear-gun and a bag full of lobster we didn’t pass a soul in about an hour. It was our 8th day in Mozambique and we only had 8 days remaining before departure…and due to the lack of wind we only had been surfing so far! Today the wind was starting to blow but unfortunately from the wrong direction: north-east instead of south. South wind was the wind we were expecting as it would have blown side shore on Tofinho, our favourite right-hander point-break, and on most of the other well known breaks in the area. Therefore spirits were high and we were desperately looking for a left hander.
“ Scoring waves is just a bonus. I like the random weird things that happen between windsurf sessions ” Thomas Traversa
