A good part of the day was spent playing tourist as we waited for the approaching front to hit. We knew there was swell so it was just a matter of the wind coming to the party. Cruising on up to Right Point to check the setup for the first time, I realised that I could be in for a treat. A short right-hander was attached to a walling left that broke over reef and then peeled along for a few hundred metres. It looked a bit like Margaret River but with a longer end section and less intimidating inside section.
The next hours were spent sitting in the car with the wipers on watching the surfers trade waves and get drilled as the swell and tide pushed in. I was getting anxious and expecting to get skunked but a quick check of the smart phone had my excitement levels up – 25-30 knots just up the coast!
Another mate, Jono “Boyah” Boulier called it and drew first blood of the day, going over the handle bars on his first wave, much to the peanut gallery’s enjoyment. I quickly rigged my 5.3 and SSD quad and bolted down the steps to get amongst the action.
