FOOLS GOLD?
The next quandary was where to be stationed when these waves hit the UK coastline? The forecast was calling for strong winds along with a monster swell (18 feet at 16 seconds!) that was set to light up pretty much every break round the whole of Europe, the Canary Islands and West African coastline. This was possibly the best swell forecast of the winter and we had already heard Kai Katchadourian and Kevin Pritchard were booked-up for Cape Verde, French sailors were on standby at Breton big-wave spot l’ile aux Vaches and another posse of Brits were en-route to Wales.
In my mind we simply had to be at the focal point where the brunt of this monster swell was going to unleash its full fury. There was no way we were going to stay at home or catch the fallout from anywhere but the epicentre of the action. Our plan was to head towards the heart of this storm and stick there for the duration.
With the wind predicted to swing to the south west, in my books, the stars were all lining up for an epic session at the Bluff, or Hayle, which is often considered the jewel in the crown of Cornish wave sailing. This stunning break, with the town St Ives as the backdrop, was surely set to be all-time? So we made our decision to head to Cornwall and stick to the plan.
