THE MOUNT
St Michael’s Mount is one of the jewels in Cornwall’s crown. A mythical landmark perched aloof a beautiful granite island in Mounts Bay right opposite the quaint town of Marazion. According to legend, it was built by a Giant called Cormoran who would wade ashore and steal livestock from local farms in the night and take them back to the island for his dinner. A reward was offered for killing the giant and a young lad called Jack came forward and dug a deep pit on the island and lured the giant to fall into his trap. Jack became known as ‘Jack the Giant Killer’ and became a local hero. During its vast history ‘The Mount’ has a priory, a fortress, a place of pilgrimage and finally a private home under the ownership of the St Auben family since 1659. The Mount also shares links with the equally famous Mont St Michael in Normandy France, which is also built on a similar tidal island. The Mount is open to the public and you can either walk across the causeway at low tide or catch a short ferry ride from one of several access points in Marazion.
