‘Old skool’ windsurfers will recall Monty Spindler, 57, as the inventor of the iconic ‘cutaway’ sails of the 80s, which paved the way to the modern twisting leech. Those with less background in the sport will have seen his sails smoking to victory in the canal in Namibia and for being one of best-known brands on the GPS speed scene for smashing personal bests. But his history actually goes further back than the cutaway – and his future seems like a blank canvas as his thirst for having fun on the water, winning customer acclaims and bagging more podiums never seems to be quenched.
