WIND CHILL
A cold day is one thing, but a freezing day with a 40-knot wind chill is a whole other story. As the wind increases, heat is carried away from the body at a faster rate driving down both skin temperature and the internal temperature of the body in the process. When you factor in wind chill, the equivalent difference can make a significant impact and even lead to frostbite and death in extreme situations.
After all the trials and tribulations of the morning, Blacky was finally rigged and headed out to brave the storm. The conditions seemed to be wavering between just about manageable to absolutely ballistic and as the meanest squalls came through there was no option but to come off the water and attempt to find shelter on the beach. The waves were actually far better than I had anticipated with head high sets reeling down the sandbar and the wind cross offshore port tack. When the sun occasionally poked out from the clouds, the whole arena in front of me looked pretty awesome, pluming surf, brilliant colours and even some pretty decent action. Maybe Blacky was onto something with this place, not that I was ever going to admit it!
