The next day the wind kicks in mid-morning and we’re out on the water by 11 a.m. to catch the early light. After yesterday’s warm up session Koester now how this place dialled and the waves are a perfect playful size for him to unleash his armoury of tricks. Even when it’s just half-mast-high this beachbreak still packs a punch and when the swell hits the shallow sand bars, it can produce a sucky barrel, great for airs – but also nasty when the timing isn’t quite spot on. One small issue I have with Nine Mile is that you have to trek down about 200 steps to make it from the car park to the sand and if you forget a battery or a memory card it’s a painful mission back up and down to retrieve anything from the truck.
