FACT BOX
Praa is around ten minutes from Penzance along the A394. The beach is signposted and you turn right and head down the narrow lane towards the car parks. There is a public car park facility on site. The beach has spaces for 500 cars, although you probably won’t be mingling with the summer crowds if you turn up in autumn or winter for a hard core wave session.
BEST WINDS
East or south east for port tack cross or cross offshore down the line riding, while north west or west north west is cross offshore starboard tack. Look for swell directions coming in from the west or south for the brunt of the swell to hit the south coast.
SUPERSTITION
It is said that Praa is an ancient Cornish word for ‘witch’, a bit of a worry if you a bothered by that sort of thing, with the added back up that Pengersick castle just up the road is supposedly one of the most haunted places in the UK!
WALKING & SURFING
If the wind is not blowing for some reason or too offshore there are plenty of places at the beach to rent surfboards. Alternatively, the walks over the cliffs on either side of the bay provide spectacular views of Penzance and the Lizard Peninsula.
QUICK FIX
The sandbar pub is the perfect place to quench your thirst après session. It’s a stylish contemporary watering hole with comfy sofas to relax and enjoy the panoramic views of the waves.
CAMPING
For a chilled place to stay, The Old Farm is a small camp site with around 14 pitches and a couple of caravans less than 400 metres from the beach; Tel: 01736 763221
