VICTOR FERNANDEZ
On my way back from Tenerife at the end of August I stopped over in Tarifa to visit a mate and windsurf Caños de Meca. My good friends (Nacho Rocha and the photographer Miqueas Muñoz) were planning a trip somewhere so I told them why don´t we just keep looking at the forecast for Portugal and make a trip by car. A great forecast showed up for Guincho and I drove to Cádiz for four and a half hours to pick them up and the next day we drove to Portugal, which is another five hours drive. We arrived in the evening to a spot south of Lisbon. It was a spot we never sailed before but a Portuguese friend told us it would be good there, as the swell was big enough and from a good direction. So we arrived at the spot and we met Thomas Traversa and Josh Angulo on the beach. It was a fortunate surprise to meet them and they probably thought the same as us with the forecast.
We sailed this spot with very light winds, I was on my big Stubby and 5.0, not planing but catching lots of waves. In the late evening the wind died so we switched to our surfboards to get a few fun waves.
The next four days of the trip we went to Guincho & we sailed everyday from 4.0 up to 4.7. My last time in Guincho was about 5 to 6 years ago as we used to go testing there for Fanatic with Klaas Voget and our shaper Sebastian Wenzel who has lived in Guincho for many years now.
I had a great trip and I loved sailing starboard tack conditions after 2 and half months of port tack sailing in the Canary Islands. It was great to see Thomas and Josh there, the local windsurfers were very stoked to see us in Guincho and we were too. I love Portugal, it’s an amazing destination with beautiful places, good food and great windsurfing.
