ROLLING
KK “That’s one of the biggest pleasures you can have. Basically it means when you are level with another rider and you go over the top of that person or from below. It means you are faster than the other person and make them look like a girl! It can happen after the start when somebody has a better start than you and then you overtake them on the first reach. That is rolling!”
SPRITZ
KK “This is linked with rolling. When you really roll another rider, that is called a spritz. That is a level above rolling someone. This terminology came from Arnon Dagan and I believe it was named after a German drink called a Spritzer. Above that there is the Re-Spritz, which is when you roll someone but before the next mark they roll you back, that is the Re-Spritz!”
FM “Rolling was the old word but the updated version is Spritzing! They are the same thing. It’s destroying somebody from over the top. You don’t really roll people from the bottom (downwind) you just pull away. When you really spritz a rider it’s from the top side! It is much worse to be rolled, the other guy takes all your wind and you lose momentum and esteem! To be rolled is psychologically very damaging.”
BVDS “When you are behind somebody on top and overtake and make them look slow!, that’s rolling. You are faster than the other guy and he basically gets screwed. You go past the guy below you so you are upwind of the guy. If you pass them on the other side that is Spritzing. Rolling is going over the top, spritzing is just going faster.”
FR “This is from Arnon Dagan. It is when you overtake somebody really quickly and you spritz them!”
COVERING
KK “If you stay on top of another rider. If you are slightly ahead of another racer you would try to go downwind and take their wind. If you are ahead you try and push the other guy upwind, you can also call that covering.”
FM “That is more of a term for Formula. You can cover a little bit in slalom but it is more of a Formula term, tacking when they tack and covering your position on the upwind legs. It can happen in a downwind race but it is not by design!”
BVDS “It’s basically the same as rolling but staying at the same place on top of them! (On the upwind side of another racer) You cover their wind and control them, by covering their sail with your sail!”
FR “That’s when you block the wind of another rider and it is really annoying for them.”
