Season
If you are a Swedish windsurfer you mustn’t mind sailing in cold water. We don’t have any trade winds or ground swells, so when the wind is here you can’t afford to miss a session because you never know when there will be action again. The best season for wind is usually between September to February, so every windsurfer I know sails all year round.
Modern wetsuits and accessories certainly make it easier to head out on a cold stormy day. A common subject when I hang out with my friends is new ideas to challenge the cold weather. We are playing around with tube systems that go out to your gloves through your wetsuit, customized gloves for better comfort and grip and recently a friend of mine created a safety pack with waterproof glow sticks, whistles etc. that you wear on your harness without it being in the way while sailing. It might sound a bit extreme but when the water temperature is -0.5° things can go wrong quickly. I do think this is why the atmosphere is so nice. During the winter, it’s not all about nailing the sickest moves or catching the wave of the day. It’s more about challenging nature and to enjoy the pure feeling of windsurfing. Coming home after a season of competing on the PWA world tour it’s nothing but refreshing to be honest.
