I’d sailed Newgale before and remembered it being hard work because it’s quite a heavy beachbreak. This time was no different. In fact I don’t think I’ve ever tried so hard to make it out the back. The few times I made it, it took 30 minutes of constant attempts at pushing past the endless walls of white water. The problem was that it was a close period swell and the waves were so close together. The wind was so light and offshore on the inside you had to bear the board away slightly to make it over the approaching waves. It felt like about 5-8 knots on the inside and about 30-35 knots out past the break! From the beach it was very strange, it looked so easy and the waves didn’t look daunting.
