NEW KIDS IN TOWN
A few days later Iballa and Dany homed into town and it was game-on with a fresh swell forecast to hit along with perfect south-east winds. As luck would have it, on the side of the Busselton Highway on the drive south to Margaret River, photographer-to-the-stars ‘JC’ spotted a helicopter advertising scenic trips and somehow managed to recruit it for the day. Nice move JC!
Now, Dany has hung out at my place in Margaret River for a couple of months before, but even for a local like me, it takes a few sessions to dial into the wave. And even then it’s not an easy break to figure out. There’s been many a Pro that’s come through town and been humbled by local sailors they’ve never even heard of.
Iballa and Philip had been a couple of times before but had both been skunked, so had never actually scored my home-spot truly firing. So the session was going to be interesting. We headed out to the waves as early as possible, which meant initially it was pretty light. This makes positioning even more critical as you don’t have the wind to help get you onto the wave in the right take-off zones.
