BRITTANY – FRENCH SCORE

ROUGH CROSSING
We headed to the Brittany Ferry terminal in Portsmouth on Wednesday night, quite excited to be leaving UK shores for this short sojourn over to France. I had been so busy making the last minute booking I barely had time to check the forecast for our overnight boat ride. I knew what we were hoping for on the west coast of Brittany, but as for the English Channel I had not bothered to check. The first hour or so of the crossing was smooth, but once we had checked into the cabin all hell let loose! Imagine being locked into a tiny box and then somebody tipping it from side to side continuously so you are thrown around like a rag doll nonstop for ten hours. I woke up at 2am needing the toilet and consequently was flung onto my back straight through the shower curtain. For a moment I thought I’d broken my arm but somehow I managed to survive, bruised but not broken. For the rest of the night it was a struggle enough to stay in the bed as the ferry rolled from side to side and slammed over the waves. Finally as we closed in on the medieval city of St Malo we hit calmer waters and up in the breakfast restaurant there were plenty of ashen-faced passengers who had also endured the rough crossing.
