PORT TACK
I have always liked wave riding on port tack because I am a goofy footed surfer so it feels more natural for me that way round even though I don’t do it as often. Having said that though, all our PWA events are port tack so I dedicate a lot of time to sailing on that tack. We get good jumping conditions here at La Perouse Bay when it’s really windy, so we drive over there to sail as often as we can and I also go to Chile for a month or 2 every year to work on my port tack sailing, plus 2-3 months in the Canaries every summer, so I guess I actually do quite a lot of port tack sailing even though it is predominantly starboard tack here on Maui. I remember that we used to do gym exercises for bottom turns on both tacks with my Maui trainer, Scott Sanchez of MPG (Maximum Performance Group). We used to hold dumbbells in our hands and stand on a specially made surfboard with a basketball underneath and go through the motions of doing a bottom turn on both tacks. We also used to do table tops on the hanging bar on both tacks, and we used to watch lots of videos of people sailing on the other tack!
