PORT TACK
The way I adapt to port tack is by really thinking on the foundation of everything. Hands placement, where to be on the wave, bending the knees, all that sort of stuff. I make little mental notes of how I want to sail, not repeating mistakes I tend to do and having a lot of fun. It’s not as natural to me on port tack, I have to think about it more for sure, but I definitely feel a lot better than some years ago. I have spent about 2 months a year on the Canaries and at least 1 month a year in Chile for the past 5 years, so that has really helped out too.
AERIALS
Doing airs in those big offshore days, it’s all about timing and commitment. The hardest thing is to make it in front of the wave, because they are so fast and on top of that, offshore winds push you out the back. So the way to land in front is by going fast and hitting the wave late. Also keeping your body compact in the air helps to project forward.
