AERIALS
For me, it’s all about speed and timing. When it’s big and offshore winds you really need the help of the lip to direct you back inside slightly, otherwise you will get blown out the back every time. The big sets are the most difficult to land inside as you need to be far enough in not to get caught by the lip or the rolling white water. I try and do a shallow bottom turn with as much speed as possible. If you don’t have speed, you have no hope.
I try and turn slightly under the lip and have it project me out into the flats. With all the speed I am carrying from the shallow bottom turn, it’s relatively easy to release from the breaking lip and project yourself up and out to the flats. Like I said some of my favourite days are those big Lanes sessions where you can really do some massive aerials. So much fun, with plenty of adrenaline to be had.
