RAW POWER
When the swell drops to double overhead we settle in for a playful day at Amnesia, swapping waves and smiles until all hell breaks loose. Martin starts yelling frantically for everyone to get out of the water and we immediately realize there’s a shark in the lineup. Everyone levitates into the sea ray and the water churns with our frenzy. But there is no shark. Air Maybe has just informed him that Keith and Ian’s flight the next day is leaving 4 hours early, supposedly, and we all scramble and start motoring full speed for the airport. For the first time the mood is subdued and faces are set grimly as we power through the lagoon. Suddenly the silence is shattered, “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. Tin boat to Searay, Tinboat to Searay. Our engine has quit, we are adrift, over.” Shit shit shit shit shit! Martin throws the boat into a massive turn and we all hold on for our lives. Ian had broken a board and Andy the Indonesian boatman was taking him back to Beran for a fresh one. They were motoring through the channel at Amnesia, outside and along the reef when the outboard broke down.
