HEAVING SEAS
With a mountain of gear, we load up on the HMS Windward. The Marshall’s have perhaps the world’s least dependable airline – aptly nicknamed “Air Maybe” – so we’re in for a 22-hr., 160 mile crossing to Ailinglaplap atoll where Martin has secured a 99-year lease on Beran island, built a wharf and a massive bungalow – the first floor of which stores all the toys. A quad runner shuttles all the gear to the wharf – two brand new jet skis, surfboards of every size and shape, mountains of masts, booms, Quatro boards and Goya sails. The boys have all brought tonnes of equipment. They’ll end up breaking it all anyway. There are waves everywhere, from the playful Nirvana, to the heavier and wrapping Amnesia, to the subterranean and dredging Maybes.
