BOCA GRANDI
“Boca Grandi” or just “Boca” is one of the more popular spots on the island for kitesurfing. Despite that, there never seemed to be more than 10 people on the water. The wind and waves are almost straight onshore and it’s a bay partly blocked off by reef, creating a variety of water conditions; breaking waves, chop and flat water between the waves in the shallows. The launch is an easy step on your board off the sandy beach. In the mornings the east trade wind has a bit more south to it, ever so slightly favouring starboard-tack jumps, while as the day goes on it clocks around to be more east-north-east, marginally favouring port-tack. Early morning and late evening also tend to offer the strongest wind.
There are 2 parking lots at “Boca Grandi”; one next to a kite school based out of a container, and another 500m south. The walk to the water is shorter from the south parking lot, and the rigging is less sandy. However at the north parking lot there is a small area with vegetation where you can de-rig without getting your gear dirty. The walk to the water is around 100m.
