SWEDEN – VARBERG

The scene
Even though we don’t have great conditions that often, the level of Swedish windsurfers is high. Most of the sailors who are into waves like to push themselves. Many drive around to different spots to catch the best conditions and when I am abroad I always bump into a Swede in the water. The competition scene isn’t great but we have still produced some really high level sailors who have been regular names on the world tour. Back in the day it was the legendary Anders Bringdal and Mattias Holmberg. When I decided to set my goals to compete on the world tour it was guys like Kristoffer Living and Andreas Olandersson giving me the inspiration and showing it was possible. Nowadays it is me and my good friend, training partner and brother-in-law, Gustav Häggström, who is representing Sweden on the international wave scene. We are always pushing each other to improve on the water but also to enjoy the lifestyle and being able to windsurf as much as we do. It is so easy to fall into the “pro bubble” and not really appreciate the fact that you can travel around the world just windsurfing for a living. There are some young, talented guys who are fired up on wave sailing in Varberg so the future of Swedish windsurfing looks bright!
