JC: (Feeling really guilty after drinking a six pack a night for the last ten days) What about exercise, do you just windsurf and surf or do you work out in the gym as well?
RN: I have always done a little bit of gym on the side, especially when I was doing the racing and trying to stay heavy. I do a little less gym now, if I wasn’t riding so much I would probably do more. I am doing so much sailing now that my weight is exactly the same as it was twenty years ago. I am around 170 but my waist is smaller from not drinking at all. I am probably in better shape than I was ten years ago. I do a little bit of cross training but not much. I am not trying to bulk up, I just am staying healthy. I don’t run, I probably should, my cardio comes from stand up. I have an elliptical and a bike in my gym and all that stuff. I’ll probably jump on that stuff three times a week but I should be doing it every day. My goal is to try and get in the water every day and also do some type of cross training every day. I want to get myself an edge, any little injury, any little nagging thing is so much harder to come back from now than it was when I was younger. An elbow gets sore and it is sore for two weeks! I need to strengthen up and balance things out to re-strengthen for injury avoidance more than anything. Just not slow down. Slowing down is the thing that will kill you! That’s why even if it just for an hour I will go down to Ho’okipa at 4 p.m. in the afternoon and have a late windsurf session when everybody is off the water. I’ll either do that, go paddle or go for a quick kite or something every day.
