JC: When you roll into Ho’okipa for a sail do you feel like all eyes are watching, because Robby Naish is so famous?
RN: To a degree. It feels good if I am riding well. The tourists come up to me and I know people are watching when I sail. The cool thing is when people tell me ‘You were killing it!’ That feels really good. That has been happening a lot lately which is nice.
JC: How do you make your free time, with all your business commitments?
RN: It kind of varies. There is no schedule because it is all based on what the weather is doing. What our development and our photo schedule is like, for all three sports Naish are involved in. I am still pretty active in all three. We have cycles where I am kiting every day. Other times where I am windsurfing and other times when it is all stand up. Between it is a mix of everything. In the business I have a really good team so if I want to disappear I can. I can work from my phone. I don’t have to be there every day. I still do not have an office at Naish which I think is good. It is not easy now to juggle. It is never ending. I am still travelling a lot, doing stuff for Quicksilver, Red Bull and my own selfish desires to go on photo stories and video shoots and ride waves. It is nicely mixed which keeps it fun, I have no schedule. I have never had a schedule my entire life other than those 5-9 PWA events on the calendar. I could tell people I am doing that this year and everything between, who knows! It is nice to still have that flexibility where people don’t really know how to tie me down or get hold of me. I can sail, go surf or go to the office all day – sometimes I do that. I was there the last two days pretty much and the guys in the office were like ‘Wow you are here two days in a row, are you sick?’ It’s cool to be able to bounce between the necessities, family, work and play. Family time is very important, Christina is six, my granddaughter from Nani, Lilicoi is three-and-a-half and Nani is pregnant again. I will be a Grandpa again in the fall. It’s getting complicated on different levels. Nani my eldest just turned 31, three days ago, amazing huh?
