You don’t seem to hold back when you ride a wave, even in the heat of competition?
Yeah that is my style of sailing. I am not so radical like Ricardo or Brawzinho, I don’t go so crazy in the jumps. I can do tricks but I am not a tricks machine or anything. My strength is to catch a good wave and try to go as late as possible and make as many turns as I can. I think the person I always look up to for competition was Nik Baker when I started to compete on the wave tour. He was killing it every event, not making any noise; you did not notice him until the competition started and bang, bang, bang you would see him in the finals. I remember in Cape Verde, back in 2008 and I saw his sailing and thought it was insane. Now I always think about him, he was a very good sailor but nothing super flashy. He is solid, that is what I am trying to do. My strength is to not copy the other guys and stick to my way of riding.
