Did you have nerves coming to Hawaii?
I was not too nervous about the title. I just wanted to sail my best as last year I had a bad result. I worked a lot on my boards during the winter and we came back to Maui in April. I had a feeling that everything was going way better. My equipment was better and I felt in a better place. Both myself and Alex Mussolini were just focussing on doing our best. We wanted to sail well and not look like kooks! In my mind I wanted to make at least top five or the podium if I sailed well. I knew it would be tough but I just had that feeling it was possible. I really focussed on this, then the world title was secondary. Obviously it was there all the time! Being on top was not bad for me. When you have a bad ranking, you are always against the wall. There is more pressure as you are fighting for your next contract. This year I already had great results, everything was positive for me. So coming to Maui with the title on the line, I already knew I had achieved so much this season. It felt better for me to be in this position than last year when I just did ok during the season.
World Champion and a baby on the way, things can’t get much better!
Maybe with the baby coming was why I did so good this year. I have to pay the bills for one more now! (laughs) I have to pay the bills for one more now! (laughs) maybe next year I will be too tired to do anything! Myself and Sophie really wanted the baby and with the life we have we have a lot of time. I am sure it will work out super nice. This for sure has been the highlight of my year. All the rest like the Storm Chase and the title is cool but for sure I am most happy about having a baby.
