JC – Do you prefer competitions or freesailing?
BG – Sharing is a quality very few people have and personally I find a lot of pleasure sharing everything in life, although as a human I tend to be selfish every now and then due to the natural behaviour where everyone wants to be unique, to be the best or get the best out of life. Honestly, I think it is what made me more of a freesailor and never made it to the top of the podiums because I don’t really care. (Editor’s note – Boujmaa modestly omits to mention that he was 2016 AWT champion and 2017 IWT vice-champion!) I am more concerned about the time shared around the contest than the contest itself and that is not good for a professional athlete aiming to succeed and be the best of the best. That takes way more anger and willingness to get to the top, if you don’t want it hard enough and aren’t ready to do everything it takes, you will never get there. The world champions are doing everything they physically can and more, emotionally, mentally etc. Even if they have to betray their friend when competing against him they would do it to make it to the next round just because the determination is strong enough and actually stronger than their emotions. Competing is all about catching the best waves and scoring the best scores to pass to the next rounds. To me, scoring a fun session in the water with people with good vibes who are willing to give away the best wave of their life, makes me want to do the same. I really would like to catch the best wave of a session, but I wouldn’t care if I didn’t catch it. Watching someone killing it on a wave then trying to do the sickest move would be almost an equal pleasure for me.
