FACTS
FUNSPORT
Funsport, the one stop shop right on the beach for all water sports activities is run by the friendly local Dave Buckland and is the heart and soul of life at Rhosneigr. Dave took over the shop in 1999 and set about sponsoring the likes of Phil and Ben as they developed as the standout sailors over the years. The shop is renowned for its welcoming atmosphere and don’t be surprised if you get offered a free mug of tee when you browse the shop après your windsurfing session. The shop is well stocked everything for windsurfers, surfers, kiters and beach toys for the family.
WHEN IT FIRES
Phil: “The perfect typical conditions for Rhosneigr to fire is a good southerly wind blowing right up the Irish sea, that way you get the wind and the swell together, within a couple of hours of 25 knots of wind the waves can build rapidly. The windier it gets, the wavier it gets! Likewise the higher the jumps!
The rarer perfect conditions is when a weather system passes over and that southerly wind switches round to a NW airflow, in this case we get down-the-line Starboard tack, when the swell keeps coming these days can be truly epic!
The best thing about Rhosneigr is it’s suitable for everyone; it can be mast high cross onshore in the bottom of the bay, whilst at the same time in the upwind end in the shelter of the boat pool it’s a clean wind and flat enough for beginners.
I’ve had epic jumping and riding days out there, come in and talked to people on the beach who’ve also had epic sessions cracking their beach start or carve gybe. What a place! On a good day the typical board I use is a medium sized wave board, 85L for me and I am around 84 kilos. I usually sail sub 5.0 even on a 15-knot Southerly forecast, at Rhossy it is usually way windier than the forecast.
