With that in mind, Rhossy has constantly been on my radar to score, hopefully coinciding with both Phil and Ben being at home and available for the full guided tour. With events stacking up from September onwards I was hoping for a summer storm, a tall order indeed but, just when I was about to throw in the towel, after the glorious weather during the Olympic Games a small window of opportunity was thrown my way. Towards the end of August, a deep low pressure system had worked its way up from France sending a chunky ground swell and howling winds straight up the past the coastline of Cornwall and up into the Irish Sea.
With 50-60 mile an hour gusts hammering Cornwall overnight, my man on the ground and weather guru, Phil Horrocks, was pretty adamant that Rhossy would be firing the following morning. I had serious doubts! Looking at Windguru the wind seemed to be peaking during the evening in Rhossy and, despite a solid 3m swell in the morning, most charts were calling for the wind to taper off at an alarming rate. Hozza was still confident claiming ‘Rhossy is always windy’ but he wasn’t the one having to travel eight hours either way to Wales!
