“ Windsurfing matters… it changes lives! ” Josh Angulo

“Windsurfing matters, of course it does! Personally to me in a great way. Recently I’ve rediscovered the joy of just blasting around here at my windsurf centre in Cabo Verde. At about 5pm closing time, my whole watersports team “tunes up” their freeride/ slalom morphed race gear and we go out and drag race with each other. I’m seeing dudes that have just started windsurfing a few months ago, already hooked in, in the straps and fully jamming and psyched out of their minds. Already trying their hardest to outlast their work colleagues and buddies down the speed strip. This is one little reminder to me why windsurfing matters… it changes lives!
For me personally, I’ve had an amazing adventure. I can point out a myriad of cool things windsurfing has done for me and why it matters, but I will narrow it down to two! First windsurfing is a God given gift and has brought me my family. How would I have ever travelled to Cabo Verde from Hawaii if it wasn’t for windsurfing? Nowadays, my ‘Capverdian’ family extends well beyond my wife Claudia and my children. I have friends that are like brothers to me and have been immersed in a culture that although very “Hawaii-like” in certain island aspects, has its own amazing and complicated cultural subtleties that I’m learning on a daily basis. As I continue to windsurf and travel I am now able to share many of these different cultural and family connections with my kids and to me that is the main thing why windsurfing matters.
Second, through all the travels I’ve been blessed to accumulate an amazing network of friends, acquaintances, in and out of industry contacts and business relationships. As I enter the final phase of my competitive career and continue my transition into a business entrepreneur and board manufacturer, all these travel skills, worldwide networks and experience in international commerce have become key tools and an amazing resource, which is also very exciting and is in a sense a new source of adrenaline for me. So to summarize; windsurfing completely paved and formed my family life and has opened the doors for the sustenance of my family’s future and what could matter more than that?”
