SAT NAV: “KEEP GOING STRAIGHT FOR 100 KMS!”
JC: So how did you enjoy your time studying in Holland?
SQ: I studied science and innovation management, which meant living for three years in Holland. I was learning about sustainability and bringing new technologies to society. I did it because I like studying. After high school it came naturally for me to go and study more. Windsurfing was never my priority when I was younger, I studied and did my windsurfing on the side. When I moved to Holland I realized that it was not so easy just to go out sailing in my free time. I ended up studying most of the time and not windsurfing so much. I don’t regret it at all, like I said I enjoy studying. It is nice to have a qualification for later and it is also important to develop yourself.
JC: Where do you see yourself in ten years?
SQ: Hopefully not still stuck in this van which I will be if you don’t speed up! In ten years I will be about 35 years old. That is a long way down the road and the way you are driving JC I am not sure if we will make it that far! I am trying to figure that out now. Maybe by then I will already be settled back in Aruba. I don’t have a fully defined future plan right now. I have been windsurfing ten years already so I am slowly figuring out what else to do. I am not the greatest planner, I tend to go with the flow of life. I have achieved my goals in racing and freestyle but apart from winning I am also trying to figure out how else to enjoy the sport. Travelling to new places and windsurfing in cool spots is something I am thinking about more. Competing is not the end goal anymore. I want to enjoy the sport and enjoy the places I go to. Competing you are ‘in and out’, so you don’t really get to experience those places in the same way.
