SAT NAV: “IN 600 METRES CONTINUE STRAIGHT!”
JC: Straight! I think I can manage that! Does it annoy you that the girls only have one freestyle event?
SQ: JC are you sure you have a driving licence, you are not coping well in the city? It is a bit sad that the girls only have one event for freestyle during the year. That is why some of the girls have branched out into racing and waves, otherwise they can hardly justify themselves. Some of the freestylers are better on starboard tack so they can’t even showcase themselves in Fuerteventura. You can’t train all year for one event, it does not make sense. There is no way for any of the girls to make money out of freestyle. It is such a shame, I can’t really advise any newcomers to freestyle what to do, I guess just go and have fun!
JC: So how do you enjoy racing compared to the other disciplines?
SQ: JC you can’t just sit on the inside lane, move over! I love racing because it is an adrenaline rush. I never used to like practising for slalom but now I am into it. I love testing and race tuning. I like the challenge of going faster and how to work out how to do it. Competing wise slalom is just an absolute rush actually from start to finish, almost as scary as driving in this van with you driving through Perth! People get annoyed when I scream on the racecourse so I have tried to calm that down. I just scream at the end. At the finish line it is like my warrior shout! Slalom is a real challenge, Lena and Delphine are always pushing. I am good in the light wind conditions but I have had the hardest time in high wind. Delphine is the best right now in high wind conditions. The overall fleet is a much higher standard than when I started. The top four used to be ahead of the rest but now the gap is a lot closer.
