CLASSIC GWITHIAN
Sunday 31st August saw an epic swell hit Cornwall and there were plenty of sailors who were onto it. Freddie Sargent and Max Metcalf made the journey from the south coast along with Timo Mullen and were rewarded with mast high heavy waves at Mexico’s. The likes of Steve Thorpe, Ben Page, Ian Black and a bunch of die-hard locals were also in the mix with some of the crew opting for cleaner waves down at the Bluff.

H20: The Has Wind Arrived!
- The wind is here!
Roger Turner reports from the latest windy spell around the Poole, Branksome and Avon beaches!
All change! Summer Over, Autumn blows in with Erin!
- South coast action!
It’s not just the farmers and gardeners that were grateful for the radical change in the weather. Proper wind and unheard-of swell period of around 20 seconds lit up the south coast. Standouts were Ben Helps at Hook Sands and some very decent action from Branksome Dene Chine (aka Brankipa) and Avon Beach at Christchurch. With wind carrying on right through the weekend there was plenty of Poole Harbour flat water windsurfing, kiting and winging action too.
- Oscar Shaw
Oscar Shaw is pushing his spocks and other mind boggling tricks and is fast becoming a local freestyle, and wave guru too. Notably there are a few wingers getting pretty good on the para wings and the hybrid F-One Plume.
- Poole Harbour
H20 Sports have a Duotone demo day on September 20th, with all the latest wings, parawings, boards, foils and windsurfing kit, based on the sea side at either Branksome Dene Chine or Sandbanks car park. Fingers crossed for some wind and waves as this is for proficient watersports enthusiasts.
- Starting young!
Ad hoc fun stuff will be happening depending on the conditions so keep an eye on the shop’s news feed.

ONE HOUR CLASSIC: STOKES BAY
The Weekend of 30/31 August saw the UKWA assemble at Stokes Bay on the Solent for the second round of the one-hour classic event series. It’s a simple and easy event to do, sail as many laps of a 1km beam reaching course as you can in an hour and the one with the most laps wins.
- Scotty Stallman
Expectations: In the week leading up to the event the forecast looked really good, and it didn’t disappoint with 20-25 knots of cross onshore wind for the 60 competitors across fin, foil and wing disciplines. Once briefing was over and event tee shirts handed out it was time to kick off proceedings with a mixed wing and wind foil race. The fleet varied from PWA pro Scotty Stallman absolutely smashing it to those who had never competed before pushing their own limits by finishing the course.
After a quick re set the fin race was under way, immediately PWA pros Scotty and Jenna Gibson made their intentions known by steaming into the lead and staying there right to the end, further down the fleet a bit of tide and a slight wind shift made the outside mark hard to make for some, mixing up the results!
Party time! The Saturday evening social centred around the host sailing club, with good food and a very reasonable bar there were stories told and for some an after party in the camping field!
Groundhog Day: Sunday dawned sunny and windy again, at the morning briefing a prize raffle was held with Jon Mobbs walking away with a NeilPryde sail and lucky Jim Crossley snapping the Barti Rum.
Pretty soon after the wind foils and wings started, with Scotty stamping his authority on it ahead of an on-form James Dinsmore and Mike George. In the wing fleet Kuba Staite won both days, followed by a consistent Oscar Dempsey ahead of a battle royal for 3rd between Tom Pringuer and Ieuan Harrison, with Tom just taking the final podium slot.
Nuclear! In an increasing breeze the fins hit the water, within 15 minutes we were survival sailing in a massive squall, literally keeping the board on the water was an effort, let alone sheet in, and then, as soon as it increased it just vanished! The decision was made to stop the race and re-run another 45-minute version as soon as conditions stabilised. Before long we were fully powered on anything from 5.5-7.5 sails in epic south coast conditions. Scotty and Jenna continued their winning ways with on form James Dinsmore and Andy Chambers flying up the rankings. In the end it was Scotty, Jenna, James, Your Scribe and Andy making the top 5.
- Happy faces!
Family: This event was much more than about the winners though. It’s a super easy accessible format that almost anyone can do, the newcomers and returners all left with smiles on their faces and many with great prizes.
Massive thanks to the UKWA event team and hosts Stokes Bay sailing club as well as event sponsors Barti Rum, JP Australia, Neil Pryde, Gaastra, Tabou, F-Hot fins, Flymount, Oneill Wetsuits, AFS foiling, PPC foiling, Andy Biggs Watersports, Challenger Sails Simmer style, The OTC and O’Shea.

The PWA season is heating up, and September is going to be packed with action. First, the spotlight shifts to the Youth World Cup in Cold Hawaii, Denmark, where wave and racing battles will unfold from 13–21 September.

No sooner does the curtain fall in Denmark than the tour heads straight to the German island of Sylt for the World Cup Grand Slam, running from 26 September to 5 October.
