BARRA
Just south of Uist in the Outer Hebrides, accessible only by ferry from Oban or Uig on Skye. Barra offers fantastic sailing conditions for the expert wavesailor. It lies north of the Skerries (reefs), which shelter the likes of Tiree from the full force of the Atlantic. In strong winds the beaches can close out completely, so beware. However, as there is nothing to stop the swell Barra can be great even in high summer, you may have to share the beach with the infrequent BA flight from Glasgow but apart from that itβs a top spot. Barra is largely undiscovered but to the NW of the Island where the plane lands on the beach, you will find cross-shore conditions in a S β SW. The beach faces N β NW. The island is very small and access is through local crofters across dunes and machair (sandy grasslands). Barra has a host of reef breaks and fantastic cockleshell white sandy beaches. Wind direction can be limited; west winds provide onshore conditions on most beaches.
