JOSS BAY
Whoever believes that east Kent has nothing to offer in the way of wave sailing should come to this small, sandy beach in strong N or SE winds. The rocks slabs underwater throw a hollow, pitching waves up to 6 feet high. The waves tube from left to right and although many expert sailors regard N as the best direction the wind tends to hit the high cliffs and bounce back creating a wind shadow close to the break. SE is easier to sail with a clean wave. Excellent surfing when the wind is too light. Goodwin Sands, seven miles offshore, sorts out the waves along this part of the coast.
