SOUTHEND
The turn off to Southend is between Campbeltown and Machrihanish. Some of the strongest currents in the UK run around the bottom of the Mull of Kintyre just off the beach at Southend in Dunaverty Bay. On the correct wind and tide you can broad reach in and out for hours. If the wind at Machrihanish is onshore then this is the only other spot to sail. The waves are generally smaller than Machrihanish. Well oiled short board tacking is the order of the day if you pick the wrong tide-wind conditions. Experts only all year round due to strong currents. Ireland is just 15 miles away.
