JP AUSTRALIA SINGLE THRUSTER 93L PRO 2014 TEST REVIEW

BEST FOR
Those wanting the speed and acceleration of a FSW, but a good stance for some serious onshore or sideshore wave riding.

RECOMMENDATION
We didn’t have enough time to experiment too much but with the stance at it’s widest and the track in the middle and middle-to-back we were more than happy in bolt onshore conditions.

BRAND CLAIM
“They cover a huge range of use and the popular 3 fin set up gives you lots of tuning options. Not just the choice of using it as a single or tri fin, but also the option to use bigger side fins and a smaller center fin. These tuning options can shift the focus of the board from an onshore rocket to a side shore playmate.”

OVERVIEW
The 93 Single Thruster arrived late to the test party and so missed out on our comprehensive assessment session, as we had to get it straight out onto the water!

Outline: Quite a balanced profile with a soft nose and even curve with the wide point around the mast track and a gentle rounded pintail.

Deck: Fairly flat surf style deck.

Rail Profile: Moderate-to-thin with tuck in front towards sharper tail profile.

Bottom Shape: Double concave/rolled vee

Rocker Line: even nose lift, large flat section under stance and slight tail kick.

Fin Configuration: 2 + 1 G10 22 cm rear centre and 2 x 10 cm G10 mini tuttle sidebites with plugs to cover boxes in singlefin mode.

Pads: JP standard with heel bumpers

Straps: JP Standard hardwearing covers.

PERFORMANCE
Firstly we have to say this board had less water time than any others in the class due to a shipping container delay. In terms of conditions we didn’t get to ride it in as much marginal wind or sideshore orientation as the others and only scored a few sessions on 4.7s and 5.3s and also only tried it in 2 +1 mode.

Our first impressions were of a very connected, planted feeling on the water. Although there’s plenty of volume, this Single Thruster feels smaller than a 93 – in fact the high-end is superb as we were as comfortable on it as were were on smaller quads during the same sessions.

Of course that makes it hard for us to comment on early planing, but we did notice good top speed and impressive acceleration, which was handy to reach ramps early in gusty, onshore conditions.

On the wave it turns with a positive and direct feel with good grip in the onshore setup and superb hold and pivot off-the-top when fully-powered.

This 93 feels more like a dedicated wave board than a FSW and, in fact, it was one of the best boards for achieving multiple turns at speed with such an extreme wind angle.

Another strong option for those undecided on a wave or FSW model or looking for an all-round board.

THE VERDICT
A fast and direct board that, although it’s a genuine, dedicated, all-round board, also excels in onshore conditions.

With a good wide stance the Single Thruster carries good speed on the wave and induces confidence for jumping and performance wavesailing.
