RRD EvolutionX 6.4
Background
The Evolution is RRD’s original all-round freeride sail. For 2012 it has been completely redesigned and each size is specifically shaped for all freeride environments featuring five batten manoeuvre sails in the smaller sizes and six batten slalom in the bigger. Available from 5.0 to 8.0 in either standard or X constructions.
At a glance
This six batten sail has a compact shape with a short luff and boom length that has a slight cut-out at the clew. Tested here is the EvolutionX model, which comes with full X-ply re-enforcement, so it should stand up to some level of abuse.
Rigging
It sets on a 430 mast and we tested it on a 100% carbon SDM. Rigging it is simple and tuning it for the conditions is also very easy, with a decent range that can be adjusted mainly through the out-haul for the best settings to fit the wind strength and get the best performance from it.
Performance
It feels light in the hands, despite having a full X-ply construction. It is well balanced and has a neutral pull that makes it very easy to control in all conditions. It has got a decent wind range, especially at the bottom end where it will get you going quickly and in the lightest of winds. In the gusts it is also very easy to handle and accelerates well. At the top end it performs very well and is fast in a straight line, when you get it locked down. Round the corners, its easy handling makes throwing it into any manoeuvre simple and with a smooth rotation you will power out of all turns with style.
The verdict
The EvolutionX is a very good all-round freeride sail for all levels of rider who want to blast quickly with stylish turns and also maybe a bit of bump and jump in-between.
