The Icon is Simmers most versatile all-round wave sail, designed to deliver in the widest range of conditions and built to withstand any punishment.
At a glance
For 2012 it has a slightly more compact out-line, with five battens and a moderate boom length. The build of the Simmer is top quality and with full X-ply throughout, it looks extremely hardwearing while at the same shedding weight compared to last year’s model. The new colour scheme really makes the Icon standout.
It sets on a 400 RDM and we tested the sail with a Simmer RDM10 400 mast. It has a huge tuning range that can be adjusted to suit any conditions or style. Tuning with the out-haul is highly effective and can be adjusted quickly and easily to suit for either power or control.
On the water
The Icon is very well balanced, with a pull that comes from just forward of centre. The power delivery is smooth and it feels light in the hands when powered up. The natural wind range on the water is pretty good and is enhanced by the tuneable range that can be adjusted easily to suit all wind strengths. The bottom end power feeds in smoothly and the sail can be pumped to good effect to get you going early. At the top end, its control and handling is most impressive. On the wave it’s great, there is plenty of pull when you need it and it goes neutral easily when you don’t. It feels quite throw about in manoeuvres and you can also count on its solid construction if you do happen to drop it, which gives you the confidence to really push yourself.
A highly versatile all-round wave sail that is adaptable to all styles and conditions, with the widest tuning range. It is a very reliable foil that has been built to last and never disappoint on the water.
